PAPAWAI UPDATE – DECEMBER 03/04

By | January 2nd, 2017|

Good evening all
For a very pleasant  change, this weekends weather forecast is  looking reasonably good for both days – just possibly the Papawai summer is returning ! (Or have I said that before ? )
A large number of hay & silage bales have headed elsewhere – still some on the main strip but they won’t prevent operations . They should be all gone by next weekend,
There could be a slight delay on Sat morning as the finishing touches are done to the new varios in both twin DG’s.
We will be winching both days .
Saturday Dec 03
Instructors  for the day are Jevon McSkimming / Martyn Cook.  Kevin Clark will also be on the field.
Chris Moss is driving the winch
Brain Sharpe/ Ross Sutherland / Lea Martinez   will look after the launch point.
George Rogers  will be working with Britt Grieve , Tim Tarbotton , Dan Corneanu & Simon Lillico to complete  their Class 2 Engineering training.
Sunday Dec 04

Instructors for the day are Stewart Barton and Jordan Kerr.
Selwyn Roberts is  driving the winch.
Brittany Grieve , Maria Cramp and Hamish McCaw are sharing launch point duties.

PAPAWAI UPDATE – WEEKEND NOVEMBER 26/27

By | November 25th, 2016|

Good morning all
Weather forecast is  a bit of a mixed bag at the moment with Saturday looking like it could be a good wave day if the lower level winds stay within operating limits. Sunday doesn’t look that flash but that’s two days away yet.
The very good news as Ross has previously advised is that  our airfield has been mown.  We  launched  29 flights off the N/S vector yesterday and as much as we’ve enjoyed Masterton it’s good to be operating back home !
There is still some unraked hay on the E/W vector which will  be removed today hopefully.
All gliders , vehicles and winch are serviceable –  Martyn and Rod are installing the new vario system in GPJ today
Saturday Nov 26

Current plan is to use the winch.
In the event the crosswind proves unmanageable for winching to the north Craig Stobbs is on standby for aerotow  off the western vector
Instructors  for the day are Mark Wilson / Jason Kerr
Martyn Cook is driving the winch
Craig Stobbs is on standby to provide aerotow
Daryl Hayes / Tim Hogan/ Vivienne Bryner  will look after the launch point.
George Rogers  will be working with Tim Tarbotton , Dan Corneanu and Simon Lillico on their Class 2 Engineering training – their patient being GWG.
Sunday Nov 27

Instructors for the day are Kevin Clark and Ross Sutherland
Grae Harrison and Daryl Hayes are driving the winch
Charlie Kern – Smith , Malcolm Smith  , Jason Donovan and Bridget Alan are sharing launch point duties
For Bookings please advise Ross on 021 438 810  or email  wgcoperations@gmail.com
Happy flying

PAPAWAI UPDATE – WEEKEND NOVEMBER 19/20

By | November 18th, 2016|

Greetings from a wet and windy Greytown !
The Papawai strip remains closed as there has been no opportunity to mow the field  during the past week . Things are looking up though, with enough dry looking days in the forecast next week to suggest we could be good to go by next weekend.
For this weekend the forecast for both days promises westerlies and as  Craig Stobbs  is available for towing from midday on Saturday  we will plan on taking one DG ( GGR) to Hood for aerotow on both days given sufficient interest.
Saturday Nov 19
Instructor for the day is Stewart Barton
Craig Stobbs will provide the Aerotow.
Mike Lennard / Paul Williams/ Sam Taylor  will look after the launch point.
Sunday Nov 20

Instructors for the day are Michael O’Donnell and David Hirst
Craig Stobbs will provide the aerotow
Tim Tarbotton, Mark Skelly and Nick Moore will be manning the launch point.
That said, there are not too many bookings in the system so  please advise Ross on 021 438 810  or email  wgcoperations@gmail.com asap if you wish to fly GGR.
Private Owners wishing to fly should please advise Craig of their intentions on 029 277 7300
Happy flying

PAPAWAI UPDATE – WEEKEND NOVEMBER 12/13

By | November 11th, 2016|

Good morning all

Persistent and heavy rain during the week has meant the mowers have again been unable to cut the airfield grass and the airfield remains closed. More than a little frustrating. If it’s any consolation the farmers are equally frustrated.

With more rain forecast for Saturday, and with no bookings in the system, we have also cancelled the option of training flights at Hood in order to consolidate resources for Sunday.

Sunday’s weather is looking more hopeful and we will plan on meeting at the Hangar at 0930 rain or shine. Given decent weather and sufficient interest we will derig a DG and travel up to Hood for aerotow operations. If the weather doesn’t cooperate we have several other activities in mind:

Review of Hazard and Safety plan
Ground operations review
A 1st Introduction to our new S80 varios
Simulator racing

Instructors for the day are Mark Wilson / Ross Sutherland.

Craig Stobbs will provide the Aerotow.

Ian Johnson / Maria Cramp / Brian Sharpe will look after the launch point.

Aerotow for private owners available with or without the DG but please let myself or Craig know by 0930 latest.

Finally, anyone having direct links to the weather gods can please tell them we have now had enough rain – please stop it !!!

PAPAWAI UPDATE – WEEKEND OCTOBER 22/24 – YOUTH GLIDE MINI CAMP WEEKEND !

By | October 20th, 2016|

Good evening all
We have a big weekend ahead of us – we are hosting a Youth Glide NZ  Mini Camp !
It’s a privilege to have been granted hosting ‘rights’ and it will be a huge pleasure to welcome Youth Glide members from both our Club and further afield.
Tim Tarbotton, Vice President of Youth Glide NZ is the chief organiser with Jordan Kerr a past President of Youth Glide helping out.
Tim will be circulating an update on the participants and schedule shortly.
Gliding Wairarapa & Gliding Hawkes Bay are both providing two seaters to add to our fleet of two. ( The Hawkes Bay glider has a motor … )
In addition to to the Youth Gliders we will also be completing the preliminary stage of our Papawai Youth Development Programme and our Papawai Marae youth will be with us at various times through the weekend.
So we will be busy.
That said we will certainly have launching capacity for single seaters and some spare capacity, including instructors, on the Twins so please let me know asap if you wish to make a booking – first  come – first served  rules apply …
Not to tempt the weather gods – but it is currently looking like they are in a cooperative mood for the whole weekend 🙂
Saturday   22 Oct  –  Winch
Kevin Clark, Martyn Cook and George White – Guest Instructor from Hawkes Bay – will be instructing.
Tony van Dyk will be driving the winch.
Brian Sharpe, Steven Graham and  Emile Van de Merwe – ably assisted by a number of Youth Gliders – will be manning  the launch point.

Grae Harrison will be driving the winch.
Mark Skelly , Simon Ford  and Anthony Tribe  will be manning  the launch point – ditto with assistance from the Youth Gliders.
Monday  24 Oct – Winch

Mark Wilson, Michael O’Donnell and George White will be instructing.
Tony Passmore will be driving the winch.
Jordan Kerr, Tim Hogan and Alain Marcuse will be manning the launch point – ditto again re the Youth Gliders
Vehicle Traffic on the Field

With a large number of possible visitors we have two issues we need to deal with – Safety and Pasture Care.
The following guidelines will  be in force:
– Unless you are towing a glider / glider trailer please leave your car at the hangar car park  and catch a lift with a Club or trailer towing car
– If there is no one at the hanger please call me on 027 248 1780 and I will arrange for someone to pick you up or give you instructions
– If you are driving on the field please stay on the gravel tracks or otherwise clearly marked grass tracks . Do not drive through unmarked grass. ( Grass = Green Gold  to the Farmers )
– Do not enter the main N/S vector without a clearance from Launch Point Control ( Radio: 134.45   Mobile: 022 476 2746 )
– Please ensure any visiting friends are aware of the above

PAPAWAI UPDATE – WEEKEND OCTOBER 08 / 09

By | October 7th, 2016|

Good morning  all

Spring weather –  !/#$! ….

But this weekend marks the beginning of our Papawai Marae Youth Development Programme so come rain, wind or shine we will be meeting and greeting the candidates at the hangar at 0930 on Saturday ..

Paora Ammunson will be there to help us kick things off.

We will be welcoming:

Awhina Southey

Charlotte Rahui

Chris Hemi

Chas Matthew

Please do join us if you can.

Flying these Youth will be our  priority but there will be launch spots available all day both days and two seater availability on a first in first booked basis.

Saturday   8 Oct –  Winch/Towplane

Tony van Dyk will be instructing.

Chris Moss  will be driving the winch.

Murray Milnes will be flying SUG

Jordan Kerr / Alain Marcuse / Paul Williams will be manning the launch point.

This is the first outing for the towplane since it’s scheduled  maintenance  and it’s introduction on a limited basis on Saturday  is being undertaken in cooperation with our neighbours.

Sunday     9 Oct – Winch

Mark Wilson will be instructing.

Grae Harrison will be driving the winch.

Chris Moss / Hamish McCaw/ Brian Sharpe   will be in charge of launch point activities ..

Depending on how the weather shapes up we could be looking at an 0900 start.

Airfield Vehicle Movements

For the next two months whilst the grass is growing furiously there will be some restrictions on airfield movements to allow for grazing and baleage requirements.

These will be subject to change whilst we work out the best configuration but the basic rules will be:

– For all vehicles towing gliders to the launch points please stick to the gravelled  track on the east side of the culvert as far  possible and otherwise on mown grass strips or clearly marked tracks . Do not make new tracks unless unavoidable.

– For vehicles retrieving gliders on the strip please use the mown runways .

– For all other vehicles please use the gravelled tracks to their end points – do not take short cuts across unmown areas

If in doubt please ask myself – your patience and cooperation will be appreciated whilst we sort out a workable pattern for the farmers and ourselves.
